There has been much publicity over the years about the risks of over-exposure to UV rays that can result in dangerous skin conditions such as skin cancer. Outdoor tanning can be very unpredictable as to the amount of UV exposure one gets over a certain time. This can result in skin burns that can lead to undesirable skin conditions. Indoor Tanning via popular methods such as home tanning beds are highly regulated by the FDA in the United States with recommended exposure time schedules displayed on all home tanning beds. The schedule takes into account the tanner’s skin type and the intensity of the bulbs being used in the bed. This helps deliver a dosage of UV that is designed by the FDA to limit the risk of sunburn. This level of control is impossible with outdoor tanning due to variables such as time of day, seasonality, weather conditions, altitude and UV levels. As a result, it has become widely accepted that the safer method of tanning is by using an indoor method such as home tanning beds.
